The American collage artist and printmaker Robert Rauschenberg played around openly with avant-garde ideas and methods. Rauschenberg’s wild ingenuity and honest eclecticism were tempered by his nearly unerring sense of color and design. In 1947, while in the United States Marines he found out his skills for sketching and fascination with the artistic representation of every day items and people. Soon after departing the Marine Corps, Rauschenberg studied fine art in Paris. In less than a year he moved to North Carolina, where the country’s most visionary artists were teaching at Black Mountain College. He studied under Josef Albers, who emphasized layout as being a practice, and Rauschenberg felt he wanted this kind of training. He mentioned that Albers has been the educator most significant to his own development. There Rauschenberg began what was to be an artistic revolution. Shortly, North Carolina country living would seem modest and he eventually left for New York to make it as a painter. Robert Rauschenberg was one of the many American collage artists who became prominent during the fifties crossover right from Abstract Expressionism to Pop Art. Healing through art collage is a term which is applied to any kind of art form employed in recovery and is also a comparatively new concept in Western culture.
